New images 2

New images

I am very happy with these images, because I think the composition and the colors work very well, all in all they are quite anonymous you never see my grandmothers face but I think her gestures and what she is doing is very natural.

oma sleeping

From the whole series of my grandma photos , I think that these count as some of the stronger ones. I really think that they reflect the closeness of our relationship. Simple things like the bed undone right next to her is the space that I sleep in.
What I really like is the gradual wake up of my grandma, especially the one where she is just opening her eyes . I find that that photo is very gripping, I think it's because there is an ieri atmosphere, It is one of the only photos where she is looking right at the camera, but still is completely calm even though she just woke up from a dream and had me right in her face taking photos.

Family Photo (rome 2005)

I find this an interesting photo in terms as to how people have reacted to it. Having always always moved around a lot as a child I would say that my family has grow very close, seeing that when we arrived in a new country where we did not speak the language and were still learning about the culture and their way of life we would pretty much have only each other to rely on in those first couple of months and till this day we still have an exceptionally close bound between each other. In my opinion the photograph above reflects this closeness, however many people find that the picture makes them feel uncomfortable, that in some way the picture nearly looks a bit perverted. For me this photo sums up my whole family life.

Memory

I have always been quite fascinated with what photos people decide to frame. I first wasn't sure if I nessarilliy wanted to take photos of photos but I think it says a lo t about the culture and the family relationships and the time period that we live in . When I was in thailnad I found it really interesting how every family dresses up for there photos and goes to a special photographer to get their photos taken . they almost look like icons or paintings at the end , very timeless as they always dress in traditional clothing.
The reason that I took this photo was mainly to capture the photo in the frame , it is one of my favourite objects in the house, I love that it shows my grandmother and her mother side by side because you can see that my grandmother is starting to look more and more like her mother as she gets older. I love spotting the obvious resemblance which you can only have with family members.

Food

I just really find these two images really interesting together as I took the on completely different occasions, they nearly mirror each other one side is where my grandma eats and the other side is where I eat.

capturing my real granny

I really like the photos that I have taken of my grandmother but to be honest I do not think that they give a truthfull image of who she really is. She is incrediblly strong and enthusistic about life aways moving around doindg things , in most of the photos that I have taken of her she seems like a frail old grandma, which is quite up setting for me personal because she has always been the strongest person I have ever known.

The image right below is much more my grandmother as I know her very cheeky and loud, I wish that I could capture more from this side.

mum and dad

This is a very normal and honest picture of my parents, it does not glorify or destiguish them in anyway , they are just a very normal married couple that although they have had an exciting life still do very normal routined things.
I'm not sure what I think about these photos because thaty are very plain and modern which is the clompleteopposite to my grandma, I have takin many photos of our appartment which you can view on the cd marker 'family' however I find them too normal and I am not sure if in a good way.
This image sumes up an evening in my family after dinner just before bed time watching the news.

Photos of my dad

Capturing Mum (breakfast)

Just when I thought it could not be done I got her of guard. These are the first photos where she just let me take my photos literally because she as too tired to do anything about it.
I am quite happy with these photos because they are so brutally honest, she doesn't have any make up on she just got out of bed and is waking up.
What I like about them is the calmness about them they are very quite and when I look at those photos it literally represents every breakfast I have ever had in my family.
I would not say that they are very beautiful and the technical side isn't that great either but they are a personal insight to my family.

My relationship to grandmas home

I find my grandma's house incrediblly interesting and it is just great fun taking photos in it because there are so many little objects and corners to find new things in.
I think my grandmas house is a great example of home for me maybe even the example of home. In all the years that I have moved around the world we would always come back here and stay with her. Seeing that I have moved houses 9 times in my life it is really nice to have something that is consistant. Everything in my grandmas house has its spot nothing has been renovated or moved since she had moved in a couple of years after the war. Every piece of furniture was added slowly over the years to create a near to perect beige apparment. A lot of love and thouught has gone into this house and nearly every object has an amazing story that comes with it, this is what I would like to capture in my photos the warm and loving atmosphere of a grannies home.

Black and White series of mum

I found that the photos that I took of my mum earlier (the ones where she is working) were not very natural, she is much to aware of the camera in those photos and thats why she acts and poses for the photos. It is nearly impossible getting my mother of guard which is very annoying cause you constantly have to tell her to just continue what she was doing as if she was alone.

What I did below was literally a practice series. I wanted to see what it would look like to take really clean conventional portrait shots in front of a white wall with a flash. I don't think that the photos are spectacular in anyway but I do enjoy how the main focus is draw to my mothers expression, even though it is posed it is still a natural moment between the two of us.

I think especially because my mum expresses her self a lot using her facial expressions and hands this could work really nicely capturing moments.

I found it very difficult working with my mum because she is a very expressive active person who very much uses her hands and facial expressions when she talks, i tryed some simple black and whites infront of a whit wall to so that the main focus could go into her face

I have stumbled across Jeff Bouws work not too long ago and I am just in love with it . His work is so subtle it that you have to look twice to really appreciate it. His motifs are not particularly shocking or stunning however working with very basic composition and color he can create quite powerful moods.
Unlike ....... Brows suggests a hint a human life in his photos which I think puls me in.

Maxine Beuret http://www.maxinebeuret.com/pages/sempereadem.html

I came across her on the conscientious blog, I found her work very interesting because it observes and deals with everyday life , her photos are a documentation of how people live their daily lives but what I find interesting is that she never shows people who are actually living there, however from the objects alone you can image the kind of person who lives there. They nearly have a some what surreal feel to them as if they were set up. I especially enjoy the photos of her Semper Eadem collection. This is a collection of photos of public interiors which have stayed largely unchanged and there for they give you a sense of history.

The photos that I have of my grandmas house remind me a bit of this as it documents a ordinary Germans house nothing has changed been moved or renewed for years , I like the way every object has its place and a story to tell nothing is inexpesable. It does not just tell the history of my family but also a history of old German values.

City Nord 31-03-07 Hamburg

City Nord is a very strange area which is very close to my house in Hamburg. It is literally a ghost town of sky scrapers, its office buildings , apartments, has shops and even a close cluster of art galleries, however you never see any one there. Its very spooky kind of like a labyrinth. I very much like it though because the architecture is very 70's not very pretty but works well when put together.

I find that with out even realising these photos show the side of me that represent the tourist, the slightly alienated German. All these photos are of me looking in but never never of me on the in side.

First trip in Hamburg

These are just some of my first photos that I have takin since I have been here, most of them are takin in my neighborhood, but some are also in the town center. I find it strange looking at them because I can not decide whether they are good or just kind of holiday snaps, the kind that a tourist takes.
I guess I have this because I do feel a bit detached from Hamburg, the whole time when I was taking these photos my mum would be pointing out all these typical hamburg things as if I was a tourist and I do feel that my attention drifted away from what I really wanted to capture.

Photos of Nisha and her home

These are photos of one of my best friends in The Hague called Nisha. When I still lived in The Hague I was round her house nearly every day, just watching t.v together, drawing or making cake.
When I think back on it I spent probably the same amount of time at her house as I spent in my own, that is why when I thought about it it just seemed to make sense that I document her house as well cause I would consider it home. What I also found very interesting is that because I went to an international school all my friends have moved around to different countries and because of this each of their houses told of a journey , my house for instance is decorated in an middle eastern style where as Nisha's is very African.

I was thinking of doing a whole series like this going to my friends homes and capturing the the atmosphere that made my feel so comfortable and then doing the same in Leeds, so in a way documenting a 'Home away from home' sort of idea.

Home for a day

Day Trips

I have started of this project with a very open mind. Having based my dissertation around the theme of 'Home' I can not say that I have grown particullary bored of the subject, on the other hand I think it would be interesting to work with this theme basing and applying it to my present situation.

Being a student I find myself never really leaving certain areas and therefor only really know Hyde Park, Headingly and the town center,I find it peculiar that i have lived in a town for now nearly 3 years but having never had the erge to go out and get to know the city.

The photos that you see below are the first photos of my little 'day trips' around Leeds. On these trips I literally just try and walk as far as possible I do not give myself a certain time period or have a certain goal in sight, I literally just let my self dirft. I think that is imporatnt if you want to explore a town, if you have a goal where you want to go, you just shut down and walk straight towards it wth out giving yourself anytime to look around and take in yoursurroundings.
